Today’s US Employment Numbers… separating the wheat from the chaff

US jobs reports are an up down sorta thing. It's either worse, or better, so how do we know?

This one comes with a surprise, especially since most all US economic indicators, which includes the jobs market, have been looking better lately.

Today's report though, via the Associated Press, indicates the US unemployment rate went up two tenths of a point in November, from 9.6% to 9.8%. (30,000 jobs added in November instead of the expected 150,000 or so.)

According to the article, this is a surprising setback and a reminder that the economic recovery is proceeding more slowly and fitfully than many economists had expected.

We were watching Morning Joe as this report came in, and what quickly became confusing to us were comments made by Mark Haines, the co-anchor at CNBC financial network. One thought Mark had is more folks are likely looking for work now… because US economic indicators have been getting better. That he said could attribute to the uptick in the unemployment rate.

Haines also said, which seemed more befuddling and contrary to his previous thought, that folks who are out of work… who are not looking for work are not counted in these unemployment reports. This certainly gives pause as to the veracity of the unemployment numbers in the first place.

What else we found contrarian was that just yesterday CNN ran an article entitled "Are Jobs Coming Back: Signs Point to Yes." (here)

What's probably more disturbing to us as it relates to reporting something meaningful to you is there's little place to go, other than opinion, to find out what is really going on. The airwaves are full of agenda, and political posturing, that leaves us rather cold, and we suspect the public too.

From our POV we see a lot of finger-pointing in all of the spin, which causes what we really believe to spring forth. Lets can all professional politicians from both parties, toss them out on the streets. Then lets get good citizens with experience and consequence in things that matter to represent us. We'll give them term limits, and when their country calls they have scant choice but to serve.

This way we might just get folks to work for us, rather than for a fool party, or just to keep themselves elected ad nauseum. Come to think about it, wasn't this how it was with the first folks who represented us? The tenacity, integrity and selfless courage of our forefathers, how we miss them so.
