South Lake Tahoe Business Spotlight: Historical Society & Museum

Take A Look Back at the Early Days of South Lake Tahoe

We all know – and love – the area we call South Lake Tahoe, but we rarely take the time to find out about the Native Americans and other early settlers of this place we call home.

In 1968, in order to preserve and showcase South Lake Tahoe's rich and fascinating history, a group of volunteers gathered artifacts and established a small museum.

In 1983, the museum moved from a log cabin into its present mid-town location.

Operated by volunteers, the museum is supported by donations, memberships and fund raisers for the Lake Tahoe Historical Society. Admission is free.

The museum features Native American artifacts (Washoe tribe), archival films and photos, displays on pioneers and settlers, and the importance of the steam driven boats that traversed the lake. There is also a museum shop with books about Tahoe (past and present), cards, and gifts.
