Team Bonding… and a 30 Dude Dinner at our House.

Pasta Bolognese for the football team… gulp!
Yep, Maxene and I are preparing, then cooking pasta bolognese today for our sons high school football team dinner tomorrow night.
This is a weekly thing they do before their game every Friday of the season. It’s going to be a carbo-blast tomorrow, but a lot of cusinart and slow cooking time today.
Got the original recipe via Food Netwook, it’s Emeril, and it has become a family fall and winter staple ever since.
An experienced cook with a grateful gift, probably having to do with living in France for 4 years when I was young, I’ve changed the dish, of course. Lets just say it has evolved. It’s very creamy, full of finely chopped vegetables to abet the meat, bacon and pancetta to add depth, and its a to-die-for tailgate treat.
So, its lots of work this afternoon, and fun with team bonding tomorrow night. And yes,we will be counting how many times they say "dude" (could be in the millions)!

Another Case-Schiller Diller

Rise in Housing Prices for 3rd Month in a Row
So today we have a drop in consumer confidence, mild stock market selling as a result, and a report on the rise of US home prices in July. Perfect. It’s a tale of two cities all over again.
Here’s the meat of today’s Associated Press report on the Case Schiller Index:
- Home prices rose for the third month in a row in July, new data Tuesday showed, more proof a fragile housing recover is underway.
A few more bullet points:
- "We expected another gain but this is remarkable," says Ian Shepherdson, chief U.S. Economist for High-Frequency Economics.
- The index has risen at an 8 percent annualized rate in the three months to July, the best performance since early 2006.
- The index, however, is down about 33 percent from the peak in mid-2006.
- Home prices are now at levels not seen since the third quarter of 2003.

Consumer Confidence is a Fickle Thing

Americans remain fearful about losing their Job
We have always found it interesting that unrest about something causes the stock market to go down, and then the next day it goes back up again. When it does, we wonder where the fear of yesterday went.
Maybe sometimes the stock market is about making money buying and selling paper, rather than a necessarily precise indicator of how Americans are generally feeling. American sentiment is not the point of today’s Associated Press article, although the report today that shows Americans are still downbeat on the economy is giving investors reason to sell stocks.
(Now if we have a report this week about housing growth, the stock market will again soar… and the beat goes on.)
We’ve been saying this for sometime too, that jobs is the key to recovery. The bottom line of today’s consumer confidence report is simply this:
- A somewhat unexpected decline in consumer confidence is due to concerns about the labor market. Consumers are still worried about losing their jobs.
- Consumer confidence has been a key focus for the stock market in recent months, and many analysts say a true turnaround in the economy can’t occur until consumers start spending again and employers create more jobs.

Growing Sales, but not Jobs

Movement in the Right Direction, but a Way to Go Yet.
As we have seen more positive signs in the US economy for the last 6 weeks or so, we’ve been consistently discussing that we must see meaningful decreases in unemployment, and a decline in the abundance of distressed properties before we will see real growth in the US housing market.
The report today shows movement in the right direction about unemployment, but there is a long road ahead of us yet. Here’s a few points from today’s article:
- "We’re beginning to see sales trending up, but not to the level that translates into meaningful gains in capital spending or jobs," said Ivan Seidenberg, chairman of the association and CEO of Verizon Communications.
- As for jobs, a survey of CEOs, whose combined companies have 10 million employees, showed that many still expect meaningful drops in unemployment. The current U.S. jobless rate, at 9.7 percent, is expected to hit double digits this year and isn’t expected to return to a more normal level for several years.
